“Outside-In: The Double Walled Throwing Technique, Soup Bowls”

   Interested in broadening your skills with a new technique? This workshop is perfect for intermediate to advanced throwers looking to add some novel abilities to their repertoire. 

   Double walled throwing provides a canvas for carving that reveals interior forms, as well as the practical benefit of allowing a bowl of piping hot soup to be held comfortably. This workshop will introduce new methods to your throwing practice as well as reinforce your proficiency with standard forms. 

In this class we will cover:

-Advanced throwing techniques. You’ll learn how to portion your clay in order to pull two walls instead of one, creating consistent sides with even spacing between each wall. 

-Carving for impact. How do you open up the space between the two walls with interesting designs that retain strength in the structure? We’ll cover that in this session. 

-Coil throwing a foot for a vessel. This technique is broadly applicable to all aspects of throwing, but for this project we will be learning how to throw a foot for the bottom of our bowls. 

   This session is an invitation to push your boundaries on the wheel and reimagine what a bowl can be. The techniques we cover here will be broadly useful throughout your ceramics practice.
