Sgraffito Workshop with Janet Montville
Sgraffito Workshop with Janet Montville
In this workshop Janet Montville will teach you the Sgraffito technique for carving designs into clay. Students will practice on two pre-made wheel-thrown pieces and create their own piece to carve, using underglaze for contrast on white stoneware. Glazing will be done after bisque firing. Participants must have basic handbuilding or wheel-throwing skills, as the focus is on surface decoration, not building techniques.
All workshop takers will receive ⅓ of a bag of clay individually from Janet Montville after you sign up, contact her for pick up - rachelscloset59@gmail.com
Pieces need to be unfired and in a soft leather hard state for carving.
Make sure pieces have walls that are 1/4” to 3/8” thick to allow for carving.
For deeper carving, 3/8” is best.
Underglazes and carving tools will be supplied.
Firings and glazing will be included for all 3 pieces made. Students will be allowed to return to Jane’s Art Center to glaze the pieces made during this workshop.
