Soda firing is a process in which at the maturity temperature of the firing cycle sodium is introduced into the kiln mixed with water. Then the steam of this mixture is carried by the flames and creates a glaze surface on the pots it moves through.

To fire in Shenron, you'll need to complete this workshop once. After that, you'll be eligible to purchase space for your work without needing to retake the workshop. Taking notes is strongly recommended if you are interested in soda firing again.

The workshop will cover the following:

  • Up to 12”x24” kiln space amount of pieces, no work taller than 16 inches. All work must be bisqued.
  • An introduction to the history of soda firing
  • What glazes and clays to use
  • How to wad your work
  • Glazing do's and don'ts
  • Dipping and spray combinations and demos
  • Loading the kiln
  • Firing schedule information

Day one, will cover all the information above, and all the demos.

Day two (next day) will focus on loading the rest of the kiln. Everyone is welcome to join, but attendance is not mandatory.

The workshop will occur every two months, but firings may not align with those weekends. The soda kiln will only be fired when fully loaded, which may take longer depending on participant numbers. All clays purchase at Jane’s Art Center can be fired in this workshop.
